Celebrating culture and neglecting language: representation of ethnic minorities in Chinese primary school textbooks (1976–2021)

چکیده

This study draws on data collected from Chinese language textbooks to investigate the ways in which ethnic minority cultures and languages are represented primary school China. Drawing methods of thematic comparative analysis, we specifically analyse how representation minorities has changed across different periods history. The analysis reveals that is largely limited contributions approach additive multicultural curriculum development. findings show a selective, traditional, stereotypical textbooks, focus primarily representative groups. Although an accurate equitable still mostly lacking diversity been gaining ground over past four decades. Interestingly, increasing interest accompanied by decreasing tolerance towards multilingualism Such observable trends monolingualism multiculturalism linguistic echo continuous changes national education policy.
